One inbox for every friend, on Beeper
October 8, 2026
Different friends ended up on different apps for reasons that had nothing to do with the friendship: where we met, what their phone defaults to, which app a group chat happened to start on. The result was six inboxes (iMessage, Instagram, WhatsApp, Slack DMs, Discord, Facebook Messenger), each with its own unread count, each easy to forget existed for days at a time. The friends on the app I opened least often were, unsurprisingly, the friends I drifted from fastest. The app was choosing who I talked to more than I was.
I moved everything into Beeper, one inbox that connects to all of them, and it fixed something I hadn't expected it to fix. It wasn't just convenience, it changed who showed up in my actual attention. A message from a network I rarely opened used to wait days for a reply it didn't deserve to wait for. In one combined inbox, it sits next to everything else, in the order it actually arrived, and gets the same shot at a same-day reply as a text from someone I talk to daily.
Why this generalizes
Any system with hidden friction picks winners and losers for you, quietly, by default, long before you'd choose them on purpose. The fix is rarely "try harder." It's removing the default that was doing the choosing.
